Friday: Book Review

Okay, I'm actually going to put the summary/analysis thing.  And for this book, a book report I wrote about it.  Okay the book is Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin.
Okay here is the summary:  (from allreaders.com)

"Fifteen-year old Elizabeth "Liz" "Lizzie" Marie Hall has found herself in ELSEWHERE after dying in a bicycle-meets-taxi accident. After taking a long ride on the SS Nile, Liz has finally realized that she's not in a dream after all, but really, truly dead. When she arrives on Elsewhere, she meets her maternal grandmother, Betty, for the very first time. A woman who died at fifty from breast cancer, Betty is now a woman in her thirties--one of the first surprises Liz is in for is the fact that, on Elsewhere, lives are lived backward from the age of a person's death. Needless to say, this thought depresses Liz. She'll never be sixteen, never have a Massachusetts driver's license, never go to the prom or graduate from high school or go to college or get married. The only thing
she has to look forward to is growing younger, until she returns to being an infant and is sent back to Earth to be born again.

Liz spends her first month on Elsewhere spending all of her time to
watch her family, friends, and classmates back on Earth. She's soon a regular at the OD's, or Observation Decks, watching life
on Earth pass her by. She's upset that her best friend, Zooey, didn't attend her funeral. Her parents are inconsolable, her younger brother, Alvy, tells jokes to get through the day, and her dog, Lucy, refuses to accept that Liz isn't coming back.

It takes awhile, but Liz finally realizes that spending hours upon hours at the OD's is not helping her adjust to life on Elsewhere. She finds a new friend in Owen, one of the detectives in charge of keeping the inhabitants of Elsewhere away from the Well, where contact with people on Earth is possible, but illegal. She once again befriends Thandi, a young girl killed on Earth by a stray bullet, who was her bunkmate on the SS Nile. She gets closer to grandmother Betty, finally takes a job in the Division of Domestic Animals helping recently departed pets find new owners, and seems to be finding a place on Elsewhere.

And here is my paper:

Reading Reflection
11/6/10

I really enjoyed reading Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin.  I enjoyed reading my book because of the atmosphere of the story, the setting, and the theme.
The first reason why I enjoyed my book was because of the atmosphere.  The atmosphere at first was mysterious because she didn’t know where she was.  Then it became scary and shocking when she discovered she was dead.  After that, the atmosphere was gloomy and hopeless because she didn’t see the point in “living.”  The book ended with an atmosphere of happiness because she finally felt comfortable in the land of Elsewhere, got her dog back, and fell in love.
The second reason why I liked my book was because of the setting.  This book took place in a land called Elsewhere.  It is where people go when they die.  It is very much like Earth.  Elsewhere is a wonderful setting.
The third reason why I enjoyed my book was because of the theme.  This book has taught me that no matter where you are, always be confident.  Also, to never give up on life, just keep going and you will discover many new things.  Third, I learned to always open your eyes to new things.  Elsewhere taught me a lot through the theme of the book.
In conclusion, I enjoyed reading Elsewhere very much.  I enjoyed reading it because of the atmosphere, the setting, and the theme of the book.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

This was an amazing movie!!  I loved it!  It started out with a few jokes here and there, but from there it got creepier and creepier!  When Voldemort spoke to everyone, my skin was crawling.  There were times when you felt like crying, or covering your eyes, or running out of the theater screaming.  LOL JK not that last part.  Well, maybe a little...  Well anyways, I was glad that at the end, it DID show the "19 years later" part.

Spoiler Alert: Detailed Description of "Deathly Hallows: Part 2" Footage Shown at CinemaCon

Entertainment Weekly's Inside Movies blog has an incredibly spoilery and detailed description of what was shown in the Warner Bros. presentation this week at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, which you can find (with lots of warning) below. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" will be released on the 15th of July later this year.

LAST CHANCE TO LOOK AWAY

From the description, the footage shown sounds like it was a collection of various key scenes from the second part of the film, opening with Voldemort whispering, "Harry... bring him to me." Ollivander tells the trio, “He’s after you Mr. Potter. You really don’t stand a chance” to which Harry responds, “I suppose I’ll have to kill him before he finds me, then.”

Slightly more lighthearted scenes are also described:
There was footage of a battle with the white dragon, and Hermione cries, “We can’t just stand here. Who’s got an idea?”
“Don’t ask us,” Ron squeaks. “You’re the brilliant one!”
“I’ve got something, but it’s mad,” she says, and before she can explain it she dives through a stone archway onto the back of the beast.
The blog mentions a scene set in the hills outside of Hogwarts:

“We need to get into Hogwarts tonight,” Harry says, but Hermione thinks he’s being rash.
“We can’t do that. We have to plan. We’ve got to figure it out,” she says.
But Ron decides they should just charge in, fearless. “Hermione, when have any of our plans ever actually worked? We plan, we get there, all hell breaks loose!”
The presentation also showed scenes from right at the end of the film:

The camera scans over a hallway full of bodies, not lying peacefully, but scattered and broken with blood smearing the floor. Voldemort’s voice says: “You have allowed your friends to die for you, rather than face me yourself. Join me in The Forbidden Forest and confront your fate.”
Additionally, the audience was shown scenes of Harry and the Resurrection Stone:

In the forest, Harry finds the images of those Voldemort meant, the people who have given their lives for him: His mother, father, godfather Sirius Black…
“Why are you here, all of you?” he demands.
“We never left,” his mother whispers.
“You’ll stay with me?” Harry’s voice is high and fearful, while the ghosts are soothing and calm.
“Always,” his mother says.
“Until the end,” adds his father, which is as ominous as it is reassuring.
The scene from the teaser trailer with Harry and Voldemort was also included, followed by the scene from the Kings' Cross chapter, a "white void" where Dumbledore says to him, “You brave, brave man…You are the true master of death, Harry.”

Lastly:
In the next scene, he is facing Alan Rickman’s Severus Snape in the Great Hall of Hogwarts, challenging him as thousands of students look on. “How dare you stand where he stood!” Potter screams. “Tell them how it happened that night. How you looked him in the eye, a man who trusted you, and KILLED him!” Anyone who knows the story can read layers of reaction on Snape’s face.

More battle unfolds, as the two armies clash over the battleground of the school. “Let’s finish this the way we started,” Potter tells Voldemort, grabbing him as they both tumble over a cliff as Potter’s voice echoes: “… together… “

But the truly heartbreaking line comes just before the end, as Potter says, “I never wanted any of you to die for me.”

Back To School Must Have List

Even though I've already done my blog post for today, I thought I would post this.  I also got this idea from yourgirlsworld.blogspot.com, but I am changing it a bit to match my school's dress code.

Back to School Must Have List

  • Jeans (Skinny & Jeggings are pretty popular right now)
  • Pretty Polos
  • Hoodies and Zip up Sweatshirts
  • Accessories (Scarves, Necklaces, Bracelets, Clips, Headbands, etc.)
  • Ballet Flats (these look super cute with skinny jeans and jeggings)
  • A pair of tennis shoes/sneakers to go with any outfit
  • Long Sleeve shirts (you can wear these alone or under polos)
  • Gym Clothes (my school has a uniform, but in winter you can wear cute pants)
  • A gym bag to carry any gear if you will be joining sports
  • Purse/Backpack
Locker Must Haves
  • Mirror (Technically you don't have to have it but I like having one)
  • Brush or comb (and ponytails for bad hair days)
  • Pictures to decorate with
  • Magnets
  • Locker shelves

This was all I could come up with from the top of my head (and help from yourgirlsworld.blogspot.com) so let me know if you girls have anything else for me to add to the list!

Change of plans!

Well, today I'm supposed to do a movie review, and I really want to do it on HP 7 part 2....  But I'm seeing it tomorrow.  So, I'll do a movie review tomorrow, and today I'll post a cool workout!

Okay, so this is a workout I found out about from yourgirlsworld.blogspot.com
